Why the desktop app

Most of ClipSpaces is the same in a browser, and if the browser suits you there is no reason to change. The desktop app is worth it for three things a tab cannot do:

  • Its own window. A canvas you collect into all day is not really a document — it wants to sit beside your work rather than compete with thirty other tabs for the same strip of screen.
  • Claude Code as the AI engine. If you already have the claude CLI installed, the desktop app can point Clip AI at it instead of at our servers, so AI runs on your own subscription and your board never leaves your machine to be answered. It is opt-in, it asks once, and it is sandboxed — how AI connects covers what it can reach.
  • It stays put. No tab discarded under memory pressure, no history back-button eating a half-drawn board.

Same account, same boards

The desktop app is the same ClipSpaces, not a separate product with a separate copy of your data. Sign in with the same email or Google account and your spaces are there. Sign out of one and the other is unaffected — they are two windows onto the same account, not two accounts.

Signing in opens your normal browser and comes straight back to the app. That is on purpose: it means you are typing your password into a browser you can see the address bar of, not into an app window that could be showing you anything.

Boards made while signed out stay on the machine that made them, exactly as they do in a browser — a local board in the web app is not visible to the desktop app and vice versa, because neither has ever been sent anywhere.

Installing it

Download the file for your platform and open it. On Windows that is an installer; on macOS, drag ClipSpaces into Applications; on Linux, mark the AppImage executable or install the .deb.

You will be asked to accept the licence terms during installation. They are the same terms as the web app plus the part that only applies to software you actually run on your own computer.

Updates

The app updates itself. It checks for a new version on launch, downloads it in the background and applies it the next time you start — you do not need to come back to this page. Every update is signed, and an update that fails its signature check is discarded rather than installed.

Prefer the browser? The web app is not going anywhere, and it is the same boards.
